Pacific Rim 2 Set Photos: John Boyega Heads to The Drift

Having spent a good chunk of the past few years in development limbo, Pacific Rim: Maelstrom – the sequel to writer/director Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film – has finally begun filming. Contrary to the initial plans, however, del Toro is not directing the sequel and is instead handing the reigns over to former Daredevil showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight; who after spending multiple years establishing himself in the television world, is set to make his feature directorial debut with the blockbuster project. Much to DeKnight’s credit as well, he’s managed to wrangle quite an impressive cast together for the anticipated sequel.

John Boyega is set to lead the cast, as well as executive produce the film, and will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, following his breakout role in last year’s Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Now, we’ve finally gotten our first look at Boyega in the character from the film too.

The images come from a new set of photos taken by Daily Telegraph of the film’s Sydney production, showing Boyega sporting a ragged set of clothes and running through what looks to be a possible den of makeshift shelters for the homeless. He’s even sporting a few cuts and bruises for good measure. Take a look at the photos for yourself below:

Not much is known currently about the plot of Maelstrom, or if any of del Toro’s original plans still remain in the film, after DeKnight having taken over as director and Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly performing a rewrite of the script. We do know that Charlie Hunnam isn’t returning as Raleigh Bracket (due to scheduling conflicts), but Rinko Kikuchi’s return as Mako Mori is still up in the air. Boyega will for sure be joined by Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jian Tian, Levi Meaden, Adria Arjona, and Nick Tarabay in the sequel, giving the film a nice diverse ensemble, filled with several talented up-and-comers.

Despite underwhelming domestic box office numbers upon its release, Pacific Rim has amassed a dedicated fanbase both in the U.S. and international markets – which, coupled with the new blood in the sequel, gives Maelstrom a better shot at making a larger impact upon its own release in early 2018. DeKnight has more than his fair share of credentials in the fan community through his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Smallville, Spartacus, and the previously-mentioned first season of Marvel’s Daredevil, making him more of an acceptable replacement for del Toro with fans. Casting one of the lead stars of the new Star Wars trilogy isn’t a bad first step in ensuring that kind of success, either

New Rogue One Stills Offer Clear Look At Darth Vader

everything they can to hammer that point home. New TV spots are debuting on a daily basis, while fans in the U.K. can already purchase their tickets for opening night. It’s expected that viewers in other countries can pre-order their own tickets by the end of the month. With the world premiere less than three weeks away (as of this writing), it won’t be long now before moviegoers make another trip to the famous galaxy far, far away.

The studio is in the thick of their last push for marketing, and EW looks like it will be a publication to watch closely. On the heels of the magazine unveiling two new coversdepicting Jyn Erso and Darth Vader, the outlet has now published a collection of still images from the film and shared more information about a certain Sith Lord that will be making his big screen return.

First up are the pictures, which essentially show similar imagery to the earlier promotional materials. There is an eye-catching look at the Death Troopers making their way through a grassy field. This could be from the flashback sequence shown in the third trailer, where the Imperials come to collect Galen Erso so he can work on the Death Star project. Additionally, a new character named Tivik (an underworld contact of Cassian Andor’s) is revealed for the first time. You can check the photos out in the gallery below:

For most viewers, the images of Vader will be the ones that generate sizable excitement. Lucasfilm has smartly held back on showing too much of the Dark Lord in advertising, which makes Vader’s role in the movie (however small it might be) all the more anticipated. Some clear looks at the villain are provided in the gallery, which makes sense since he was a focus of EW‘s latest report. Lucasfilm Head of Story Development Kiri Hart explained Vader’s dynamic with Director Orson Krennic in an interview:

Jav Hd
“Here is the thing about Krennic: his perspective obviously is that of a person who doesn’t understand the Force. And Darth Vader comes at everything from the perspective of understanding the Force. So that I think is the thing that you see sort of separating Darth Vader from other characters with regards to a super weapon like this.

“There are military men who are interested in a really effective piece of military hardware, and Darth Vader is a little bit beyond that, right? He’s tapped into something on another level, on a spiritual level. So, that’s part of the fun of Vader in the context of the Imperial Military. He’s got a broader perspective.”

Rumors have suggested that Vader first enters Rogue One‘s narrative to discuss with Krennic when exactly the Empire should utilize the Death Star, and Hart’s quote lends credence to that speculation. In A New Hope, Vader didn’t seem too fond of a fully operational battle station, referring to it as a “technological terror” that could not rival the power of the Force. As Hart suggests, Vader’s understanding of the universe as a whole is far more extensive than others working for the Empire, which should lead to some fascinating conversations between the Sith and Krennic. They don’t see eye-to-eye on this subject, and that probably won’t bode well for Krennic in the end.

The multitude of Rogue One trailers and TV commercials have done a great job of highlighting all the fresh aspects of the spinoff, from the new vehicles, cast of protagonists, and stromtrooper variants. There’s no denying many are excited to see Jyn Erso and her team steal the Death Star plans, but Vader is undoubtedly an element casual audiences and hardcore fans cannot wait to see. In all likelihood, this is the final instance (for real, this time) Lucasfilm will include the iconic character in a live-action film, so the onus is on director Gareth Edwards and company to make it count. By all accounts, Vader has a minimal, but crucial, part to play, so hopefully he has a couple of standout moments.

Ghostbusters Producer Promises ‘Many More Movies’ in Development

When the actual reviews came in for the Ghostbusters movie reboot, the critical response was overall mixed-to-positive. Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as a group of paranormal enthusiasts intent on stopping a ghostly invasion, the film saw Manhattan invaded by otherworldly spooks, some of which were familiar to lifelong fans of the franchise.

It’s been tough to say whether or not Ghostbusters will be making a return to the big screen in the near future, seeing as the reboot didn’t perform well enough at the box office to cover its expenditures right off the bat. Fortunately for those that did enjoy the reboot, new details have come to light – suggesting the paranormal action/comedy franchise will indeed live on, in some form or another.

Ghostbusters 1 & 2 director Ivan Reitman produced the Paul Feig-helmed reboot of the franchise, and Reitman has now offered some intel as to where the future of the series lies. Reitman offered his thoughts during his Mr. Wavvy podcast interview, saying:

“There’s going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, they’re just in development right now.”

Though it’s been reported that Ghostbusters (2016) may have lost upwards of $70 million after its hefty promotional budget is taken into account, Sony has argued against that and claimed that those numbers are well off-base. It’s nevertheless clear that the reboot wasn’t a runaway commercial success and that is why there’s not yet been concrete news about a sequel and/or spinoff film being in development, before now. While it was previously reported that Sony still has plans for a Ghostbusters cartoon TV show and animated film, Reitman’s recent comments suggests that’s not all that’s brewing quietly behind the scenes.

Beyond that though, the Ghostbusters reboot certainly has its fair share of supporters and may yet serve as the franchise foundation that leads to a direct sequel seeing the light of day. It’s clear that both Reitman and Feig want to work on the series once more, so a smaller budget could be the key needed to ensure the spook-bustin’ ladies get back together. Reitman certainly seems optimistic, so who would we be to dispute what a man so close to the movie’s production has to say?

Feig, for his part, is moving on to other project in the meantime; specifically, a talk show host comedy written by (and costarring) Mindy Kaling, which Feig is directing. If Reitman is to be believed though, there will be more significant Ghostbusters-related news to come in the year that lies ahead.
